Students: Free Fun Food and Money

If you are able to download an App, set up your profile and submit some photos of yourself (like you’ve not done that before) and have some free time, then you can become a Film Extra (or “Supporting Artiste” as we often refer to them as) with Uni-versal Extras in block-buster films, TV series, photo-shoots and more.

If you’re a student, it’s FREE, it’s fun, you get paid and you get fed. It's a win-win, so why not give it a try?

THIS IS SOMETHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS

Given you are receiving this blog post you are probably at least a bit aware of the world of the Uni-versal Supporting Artist. If you have stolen this email off someone then "Welcome"...and we suggest you read our previous blog article on the Life and Times, Ups and Downs of working as a Supporting Artiste in the weird and wonderful world of TV and Film production [insert link here].

Getting more to the point, the heading of this section, you might want to let your friends know that you can do worse than getting paid and fed whilst hanging around production sets across the UK. They will be eternally grateful, and that's a long time. Or at least it should earn you a few drinks and great stories.

IT FITS A CHAOTIC TIMETABLE

It is designed to fit in and around your life as a Student. The roles advertised clearly explain the filming or non-production dates that you are expected to attend so you know immediately whether they fit with your plans; studying, socialising, going home to get fed, wash clothes, etc (or was that just me?). Most often it is just for a few days, but it can be for a few more days over a period of a couple of weeks. Either way you get to know in advance if it fits in with your calendar. Not many employers offer that level of flexibility.

YOU CAN STUDY AT THE SAME TIME

There is no hiding from it, Supporting Artistes have to spend a fair amount of time kicking their heels and hanging around waiting for their part. This time can also be constructively used for studying, again unless you are like me and studying just got in the way of having a good time.

CUDOS

Take a look at our productions pages. Now imagine you've been part of one of those and are then able to bask in the reflected glory. You get the picture.

DRESSING UP AND GETTING FED - WHO COULD ASK FOR MORE?

Seriously, this has to be one big attraction. Who doesn't want to get dressed up and pretend to be "Passerby #24" then get food and cup of tea for their troubles?

YAWN...IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR CV

Perhaps not at the top of your agenda right now but it is true, employers often look at the bits of the CV that show you as a person with initiative and 'of character'. Why not add ‘Warner Bros., Background Artiste, Fantastic Beasts to your CV?

THE GRANDE FINALE - YOU GET PAID

Yes. If you take part in a production as a Supporting Artiste you will get paid. You get paid for costume fittings. You get paid for Covid-19 tests. You get paid for having your hair cut. The amount you will get paid can vary by quite a bit, but it can take into account the early starts and late finishes, what you’re asked to do on set, the travel to awkward locations, the being part of something exciting and possibly very well known, and the hours you spend just doing nothing other than meeting a variety of interesting people for the very first time, in some pretty interesting locations. Getting paid for all that? Sounds good, doesn't it? Take a look at the pay rates here…
